Publisher's note:

Thomas Boston (1676-1732) was a Scottish Puritan minister and author and The Crook in the Lot is one of his most well-known works. Subtitled The Sovereignty and Wisdom of God in the Afflictions of Men, he examines a number of Scripture passages (Ecclesiastes 7:12; Proverbs 16:19; 1 Peter 5:6) to trace the hand of God in all the disturbing events in a Christian’s life. He shows that God is intimately involved in all the events that seem to be against us, that His purposes are irresistible and our responsibility is to adjust our thinking rather than complaining and fretting. Prepared during the closing months of his life, The Crook in the Lot was first published posthumously in 1737.

Contents:

1. The Crook in the Lot (Ecclesiastes 7:12)
2. Every Affliction Designed by God
3. The Impossibility of Resolving Problems Ourselves
4. Processing Afflictions Correctly
5. Attitudes in Afflictions (Proverbs 16:19)
6. Tuning Our Thinking
7. The Necessity of Humility (1 Peter 5:6)
8. Humbling Ourselves
9. Lifted Up in God’s Time
