An exceptionally well-written, refined work characterised by carefulness and profound observation, this is by a nineteenth-century Princetonian Old Testament professor. It is a pleasure to read, yet remarkably condensed and economical in style. It is not actually a commentary, inspecting all chapters, but as its subtitle (the original title) states, is an overview of the purpose and message of Job, and a review of the principal characters of the book. The author is very critical of Job's friends, but, we feel, not critical enough, for he understates the polarised positions ' grace versus works ' of Job and his friends.
The author is also overawed by the concept of progressive revelation, and rather underestimates the grasp of eternity available to the very earliest saints of the Bible. For preachers, however, the reading of this fairly brief book will have an extremely valuable place in preparing for ministry on Job.
