Reviews mostly by Dr Peter Masters

This reviewer knew and admired W J Grier (1902-1983; known among pastors as 'Jim'), a founding minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and a prodigious writer, who edited the magazine of his denomination for 53 years. As a student at Princeton Seminary in the 1920s, he resisted the encroaching liberalism and left (along with professors such as Gresham Machen and Geerhardus Vos).
This charming and stirring biography is drawn from the author's magazine articles. Here is Calvin, the astonishingly hard worker, deep into the night; the sufferer from many illnesses; the instrument of reformation and revival; and the pioneer and prince of reformed-perspective commentaries.
It is a rare and special ability that can do justice to Calvin so efficiently and movingly in 162 pages, and W J Grier accomplishes this marvellously.
