Publisher's note.

J C Ryle (1816-1900) became the first Bishop of Liverpool. Prior to this he had served churches in East Anglia, and was vicar of All Saints Church in Stradbroke from 1861-80. The interior of that church is shown on the front cover. Ryle wrote extensively: his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels remain popular as devotional aids. His books to help in the Christian life include Holiness and Practical Religion. He wrote numerous historical sketches and biographies and these have stimulated many to further investigate the key figures in British church history. In The Christian Race and other sermons we have Ryle the preacher. Each of these twenty four sermons is evangelistic in intent and shows Ryle’s mode of reasoning and his concern for the souls of his hearers. It is hoped that they will help to inspire a new generation of gospel preachers in the present day. First published in 1900, this work has been completely re-typeset for issue in this form.
