Publisher's note:
This Gospel work has been used extensively since it was first issued in 1861. It traces our need of peace with God before showing that it cannot be found within ourselves or in anything we can do. True peace is found in the work of Jesus Christ, acting as our substitute in dying on the Cross for His people’s sins – the only means of satisfying God’s justice and holiness whilst bringing the sinner into a new relationship with God.
Excuses based on the sovereignty of God, lack of feeling or power to believe are handled using scriptural arguments. The reader is urged at all times to trust the plain statements of the Bible regarding God’s willingness to save, and depend entirely on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Here is an illustration of the Gospel reasoning of earlier generations of preachers – not perhaps to be directly imitated today, but to be learned from.
